Shiner Beers Stage at TexFest!

Stoney LaRue

The Texas Bowl is pleased to announce that Texas Alt-Country band the Old 97’s will be the headliners for TexFest at this year’s Texas Bowl. The band is well known for their exhilarating live shows as well as appearing in the movie “The Break-Up” with Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn. Also appearing on the Shiner Beers Stage will be Texas Red Dirt Artists Bo Cox and Stoney LaRue.

OLD 97’s  (appearing at 5:00 p.m.)

Old 97sOne of the most popular bands in the alternative country movement's rock & roll wing, Old 97's hail from Dallas and drew their inspiration from classic country, bar band rock, the raw sound of early punk, and — especially on their later records — the tight song craft of power pop.

The band was formed in 1993 by singer/guitarist Rhett Miller and bassist Murry Hammond; Miller had previously played around the Dallas area as a folksinger and a British-style pop devotee and actually earned a creative writing scholarship to Sarah Lawrence College but dropped out to return to Texas and concentrate on music. When he teamed up with Hammond, his original material was allowing the influence of Texas country to seep in.

The two soon added lead guitarist Ken Bethea and recorded their initial demo tape at Austin's famed Cedar Creek studio. Drummer Philip Peeples also came on board, and in 1994, Old 97's issued their debut album, Hitchhike to Rhome, on the indie label Big Iron. It received positive reviews and began to build the group's alt-country fan base, which they consolidated on the follow-up, Wreck Your Life. Issued on alt-country stalwart Bloodshot Records in 1995, Wreck Your Life fleshed out the group's sound and presented them as a sharp, eclectic country-rock outfit.

The positive attention given to the band's two indie albums led to a major-label deal with Elektra Records, on which Old 97's debuted in 1997 with Too Far to Care. Critics hailed the album as the best balance yet between the group's Texas traditionalism and pop leanings and placed the band among the leaders of the alt-country movement.

The band will perform at TexFest beginning at 5:00 p.m. on the Shiner Stage.

Stoney LaRue (appearing at 3:45)

Stoney LaRueAt 3 years old, Stoney LaRue could be found belting out “Swinging” by John Anderson on his Mr. Microphone radio. The son of a struggling bass player and a nurse, LaRue understood the allure of music at an early age, and recorded his first works at age twelve.

He earned accolades through school for his unmatched vocal abilities and promising instrumental talents. Many subscribe Stoney LaRue to the category of artists that are simply natural born performers, just don’t try to limit him by category.

Born in Taft,Texas, LaRue actually spent the majority of his adolescence north of the Red River, where he was raised in Southeastern Oklahoma. He never really pictured himself doing anything else but making good music, so LaRue eventually made his way to the state’s Red Dirt hotbed of Stillwater, where he began to develop his individualized style from a widespread range of influences.

From Willie Nelson to Ray Charles, to The Grateful Dead and Kris Kristofferson, LaRue’s emerging style impressively blends varied elements of country, blues, and soulful rock into cohesive, vocal driven performances.

Bo Cox (appearing at 3:00)

Bo CoxBo Cox's debut album 'Rich Man’s Gold' was produced by Mike McClure in Norman, Okla., and was released in August 2007.  Bo was recently highlighted as one of the most requested artists on RadioFreeTexas.org and was selected to be added to Lone Star Music’s sell-out cd sampler.

Bo has thrived as an up and coming artist in Texas and his success at live shows is a direct result of his talent and growing popularity. Bo is now armed with a full band and ever growing fan base and buzz and is busy touring around Texas and surrounding states, doing what they love. Catch the next show in your neck of the woods!
